Books Written by Me
On this page I will upload books written by me. It will included nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. My goal, of course, is to have them all published and for sale in bookstores. Though I’m currently working on that, I wanted to also make the books available on my website, so that you can download and read them.

The first book I’ve uploaded is called Chasing the Moon: Teaching and Traveling in China. I lived in China for nearly five years, teaching English at universities. In my free time I traveled to several cities and remote places, and also experienced having surgery in a Chinese hospital. Chasing the Moon is a reflective account of my experiences as a university teacher, as a traveler to Chinese cities and villages, and as a patient in a Chinese hospital. My book also includes information about Chinese history, ethnic minority customs, and folklore.
I wrote this narrative nonfiction book in 2014, but several chapters of it are the travel articles that I have posted on my website during the past five years. It also includes plenty of new material that’s never appeared on my website, such as a description of my surgery experience and stay in a Chinese hospital.
I hope you enjoy the book, and I look forward to receiving your feedback.

The second book I’ve uploaded is called Catching Arrows and Other Stories. It’s a collection of 26 fiction stories. What kind of stories? The majority are magic-realist stories, folktales, and ghost stories. One inspiration for these stories are the tales of
Pu Songling – Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. For some stories I drew upon Chinese folklore and mythology. And some stories look more like the magic-realist tales of Garcia-Marquez and Borges, but with Chinese characters. Only one story,
Cloud Gallery, is primarily realistic. And only one story, Jia, is set in America. All of these stories were written within the last six years, and many of them have been previously uploaded onto my website.
I’m currently trying to get individual stories published in literary journals, as well trying to get the entire collection published as a book. But while I work on this I wanted to make the story collection available to family and friends. You can download the book, print it out, and imagine it’s a real book.
I hope you enjoy my story collection, and I look forward to receiving your feedback.
